a man and his mirror

you spoke poetry of us, words you’ll never quite understand.
and i used to eat it up, with eager eyes that you loved
feels like forever ago but i know i was only fifteen
when i used to drown myself in your hollow stanzas,
and you used to drown us in the romcom movie moments
forced chin grabs and big garden state lingo
because you only learned how to love from 500 days of summer
and you could only ever see yourself through my eyes and you reveled.
because there was no better pair
than a man and his mirror.
words from the author:
I think movies always tend to romanticize women and men when women are only for character development; I thought it might be cool to touch upon some infamous romcoms that highlighted this trope. Garden State, 500 Days of Summer-- women are too often viewed as reflections for men to feel like better people, which definitely impacts dating and younger girls. Women need to have bigger dreams than being someone’s Ramona Flowers and I wish I knew that when I was a kid.
