The song Midnight Sky is about a deep dive into a relationship through Miley’s point of view in her past relationship with Liam Hemsworth. The lyrics tell an emotional story of feeling trapped in a relationship and wanting to break free. 

 

The second lyric says,"But it's been a long time since I felt this good on my own" --meaning that there has been something she’s been holding back from being her best self for a long time. 

 

Miley’s done being held back. She wasn't meant to be held down by anyone and she's not going to put up with it anymore as it’s expressed in the next few lyrics. "I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no / I don't need to be loved by you / Fire in my lungs, can't bite the devil on my tongue, oh no." 

 

With the next line, it’s known that she won't be held back from who she is anymore. "Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes / Forever and ever, no more." Miley felt like she needed to discuss this past year  where she learned to declare what we find acceptable and not, and where our morals and our values lie. 

 

Miley mentioned that she felt like she had to tell her story and her narrative, so she decided to tell it through ‘Midnight Sky’. As a woman in a relationship, a lot of the time we can get villainized when 'forever' doesn't happen. Sometimes you’re meant to be alone; it isn't necessarily bad because you don’t belong to anyone and you shouldn’t be with anyone who prevents you from being who you are!
