TW: mention of suicide

Billie Eilish is currently one of the most viral teen sensations of our generation. At just 19 years old, she has won 5+ Grammy awards, BRIT awards, and has sold out concerts in minutes. The young singer has worked her way up to success with her music, most of which she writes are about what she has gone through personally. Billie hopes she can reach out to others who relate to her music. Although all of Billie’s songs are phenomenal, there’s a song that really spoke out to me-- it’s called “everything i wanted.” This song is about a nightmare the young artist was repeatedly having, a nightmare about committing suicide and no one caring about her.

“Thought I could fly (fly)

So I stepped off the Golden, mm

Nobody cried (cried, cried, cried, cried)

Nobody even noticed

I saw them standing right there

Kinda thought they might care (might care, might care)”

At first when I heard these lyrics, I thought the singer was talking about something else, but in reality she was talking about stepping off the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge and committing suicide, and along with that, no one really caring; her family, friends, fans, no one. As a person who has struggled with mental health, it really stood out to me how she described her dream and what she felt because I’ve been in her place before. There’s been times I’ve felt like if I left, no one would care, but it’s not true-- many would. See, this society is filled with a lot of broken people who’ve had the same mentality I’ve had, but let me just say that there are people who would care if someone in their life was gone. There are friends who would care, family, teachers, coworkers, etc. Someone always cares about somebody else’s life whether that person believes it or not.. They just need the reminder that people do care, which is why it’s extremely important for us to check up on one another and spread kindness.

“And you say, As long as I'm here

No one can hurt you

Don't wanna lie here

But you can learn to

If I could change

The way that you see yourself

You wouldn't wonder why you hear

They don't deserve you”

This is another part of the song that spoke to me because the artist talks about what her brother says in her dream. He’s reminding her that he’s always there for her and nothing nor no one can hurt her while he’s around. This is such a perfect example of how us women should be there for other women. We need to check up on our loved ones and remind them that we’re there for them because none of us ever know what someone is going through and who may need to hear that. I’ve been in situations where someone was going through some obstacles, and I’ve had to remind them that they matter, because, really, if I don't, is there a guarantee that someone else will? I’m sure many of you reading this have your own hardships. This is why we need to check up on one another and reach out to those you haven’t talked to in months or even years. Life gets hard and lonely at times, but having someone to talk to is better than dealing with something on your own.

If you’re reading this and you’re going through something, remember that you’re loved, you matter, and life is beautiful with you in it.
