On March 16th, 2021, a gunman opened fire in three spas in Atlanta, Georgia
and the attacker specifically targeted these places because the women who worked
there were Asian.
When assessing this hate crime, which has yet to be officially called a hate
crime, the Georgia sheriff claimed that the murderer was having a “bad day,”
essentially humanizing this person in a way that is supposed to make us feel sorry
for him. Firstly, the Georgia sheriff was also recently outed for having racist t-
shirts that link COVID-19 to Asian people, which now sheds light onto why the
sheriff felt bad for him, because he is also a racist. Secondly, the notion that white
mass murders should not be severely punished for the crimes they committed is
beyond ridiculous and a totally backwards way of thinking. The police force and
the justice system as a whole is meant to defend society against people like that.
What do we do when that system fails us? More importantly, what do we do
when that system refuses to help us because they think like those who want to hurt
us?
This horrible tragedy should be assessed as one thing only, a hate crime. The
COVID-19 pandemic brought forth increased racism against the Asian community.
Moreover, that man specifically targeted these women due to his lust for them. The
fetishization of Asian women is described as the sexual objectification of Asian
women based on their appearance. This fetishization also leads to the increase in
sexual stereotypes against Asian woman that can lead to harmful consequences
such as this tragedy.
The motivation behind the gunman’s attack was because he had a fetish for
Asian women – which is racist and sexist. For that reason, he stated he wanted to rid
himself of “temptation” and therefore he murdered these women. This is nothing less
than a disgusting act of hate, specifically because he went to three separate
locations and specifically targeted these women and killed eight people, six of
them being Asian women. Based on these facts, the people of Georgia are calling
for this tragedy to be labelled a hate crime on the basis of race as well as sex.
Furthermore, this heartbreaking event led to protests and a rise in the Stop
Asian Hate movement. This is a necessary movement, for it sheds light on
discussions that have been ignored for far too long. Below is a link where one can
educate themselves, donate, and share information regarding the Stop Asian Hate
movement.
What happened on the 16th , was nothing less than an act of misogyny and
racism, and with the police force barely demonstrating any attempt to condemn this
behavior, it only further encourages it. Everyone has bad days, that doesn’t justify
murder and that does not hide your ignorant mindset.
In response to the Georgia sheriff, I say fuck his bad day.
